Event Recap: Sabor Español

The night was alive with the spirit of Spain as Joel's Place hosted its much-anticipated Sabor Español, a Spanish food and wine event last April 24, 2024, transporting guests straight to the heart of Spain.

The evening unfolded with a welcome glass of Raventos I Blanc de Blancs 2021, a sparkling wine that set the tone for the delightful pairings to come. As the beautiful melodies of Spanish guitar filled the air, guests enjoyed charcuterie plates overflowing with cured Manchego cheese, melt-in-your-mouth Jamón Serrano, and the irresistible combination of fresh bread and salsa de tomate. Each bite was a delicious journey, perfectly complemented by the Raventos Blanc de Nit 2021.

Next, a trio of tapas arrived, each a miniature masterpiece. The Hojaldre con Brie y Cebolla was a delightful contrast of textures—the flakiness of the puff pastry yielding to the creamy brie and the sweetness of caramelized onions. The Gambas Pilpil offered a burst of sunshine with succulent shrimp swimming in a vibrant garlic, chili, and paprika sauce. Finally, the Manchego y Jamon Serrano Croquetas was a true crowd-pleaser with its creamy bechamel melting away to reveal a heart of savory cheese and cured ham, finished with a touch of saffron aioli. These delectable bites were beautifully paired with Can Sumoi Xarel Lo 2022 Penedes and Can Sumo La Rosa 2022 Penedes, wines that danced on the palate with each flavor explosion.

The main course was a paella fit for a fiesta! The Paella de Marisco, a fragrant medley of saffron-infused bomba rice, offered a generous assortment of fresh seafood, culminating in the coveted, slightly crisped socarrat at the bottom of the pan. Alongside this masterpiece was the Pintxos Morunos or bite-sized skewers of pork belly marinated in a delicious blend of Moorish herbs and spices. The pairing with Can Sumo Granata 2021 Penedès was a match made in gastronomic heaven, with the bold wine standing up to the rich flavors of the paella and complementing the savory pork skewers.

As the evening ended, guests were treated to a slice of Pudín de Pan, soft and crowned with chocolate and cranberries. The sweetness provided a fitting finale to this unforgettable journey of Spanish flavors.

Guiding guests through each course with expertise and charm was Mr. Marti Pujol, Brand Ambassador of the esteemed Raventos and Can Sumoi Wineries in Penedès, Spain. His insightful tasting notes throughout the evening elevated the experience, providing a deeper appreciation for the artistry behind each wine pairing.
